THE NAVIGATOR'S HANDBOOK
By Jeff Toghill
This is an absolutely
gorgeous book (shall we say coffee table quality?), and at a ridiculously low
price. It is an overview of everything you need to know (navigationally) to
go to sea. Topics covered include: charts and publications, instruments for
navigation (compasses, sextants, and others), harbor navigation (tides, lights
and safe anchorage), coastal navigation (plotting courses, bearings, and fixes),
celestial navigation (31 pages devoted to this), crossing oceans (currents,
winds, communications, and safety), and electronic navigation with GPS, radar
and other electronics. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and
diagrams. Many are breathtaking. SC, 2003, 128 pages. SW 2.0 lbs.
