FUGAWI - MARINE ENC
Northport Systems
Fugawi is fast becoming one of the most popular charting software systems in the world. Its low price, and the ability to scan one?s own charts into the system made it the first choice of economy minded sailors. Now it has included free ENC and RNC charts of US coastal areas, and expanded its compatibility to Palm OS and Pocket PC devices, the Suunto GPS iX9, and Navionics supported charts and chart plotters.
A Charting Navigation Program Fugawi supports reading most popular commercial raster charts
including Maptech BSB 3 & 4, SoftChart, and NDI charts. It also supports Topographic DRG
charts, and even charts you can make yourself. The latter can be done with a
simple page scanner. You can scan paper charts, cruising guides, ChartKits,
roadmaps, and even a drawing or photograph if you choose to make one. Fugawi
supports the newly created NOAA ENC vector charts which are free to the public,
and includes these charts with the program. These ENC vector charts are part
of an international agreement (S-57) to chart the world. When new charts are
released, they will be available to download free at a NOAA website whose address
is included with the software. Although these new charts (and their updates)
are free, some international versions may have a price. For inland sailors,
there are many free inland ENC charts (IENC) which are also included. Either
program ships with Region 1 NOAA Planning charts on CD, and USA Streets. This
is a fully indexed street map for the entire U.S. Zoom out to the whole country,
or zoom in to detailed side -streets. The streets can be displayed onto land
or marine maps. A new 3D feature provides a ship's eye view of the coastline. Once
docked, use the street maps to get around.
