Stormglass Weather Forecaster

STORMGLASS WEATHER FORECASTER
E.S. Sorensen

2910-a

The Royal Navy's famous meteorologist, Admiral Fitzroy, who sailed with Charles Darwin aboard the Beagle, made extensive observations of weather using barometers and the stormglass. How the barometer works, and what it tells about the weather, are well documented, but not so for the stormglass.

This mysterious weather predictor has been used since 1750, but how it works is still a mystery. It is believed that the stormglass responds to electromagnetic fluctuations caused by weather and by solar storms. The appearance of the crystals inside the glass foretells changes in the coming weather.

2910b

The hermetically sealed glass chamber that holds the liquid (a mixture of distilled water, potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, alcohol and camphor), is encapsulated in a polished brass or chrome cylinder.

2910c

This fine stormglass, made in Denmark, is available in either lacquered polished brass, polished stainless steel, or matte stainless steel. and comes with free ($27 value) matching hanging hook. SW 1 lb.

A wood plaque with brass stormglass and brass plate showing details of operation is also available SW 6 lb.
